Several members of the Poetry Society of Michigan will gather for a public reading from Water Music: The Great Lakes State Poetry Anthology at Nicola’s Books, 2513 Jackson Ave., Ann Arbor on Sunday, April 23rd at 3 PM. This reading of their own poems is in observance of Shakespeare’s birthday as well as National Poetry Month.
Subjects and styles are as varied as Michigan’s topography and culture: sandy beaches and diversified industry in the West, Rust Belt spaces in the East, long winters in rural UP North. Some of the poems’ titles suggest the diversity: “The Midwest in Us,” “Swimming after Labor Day,” “Scrap Metal Mantra,” and “Detroit Pheasant.”
More than a dozen of the poets who participate have distinguished records of book and magazine publication. They include Marilyn Churchill, Madeline Diehl, Katherine Edgren, Joy Gaines-Friedler, Laurence Goldstein, David James, Zilka Joseph, Michael Lauchlan, Ken Meisel, Mary Minock, Saleem Peeradina, and Laurence Thomas. The Editors— Edward Morin, Lynn Gilbert, and David Jibson— will read and be on hand for a discussion afterward.
